Classroom Celebration Guidelines

At Bethune K-8 we recognize that there are times that warrant classroom celebrations. However, so that we are not taking away from time that is designed for academics, we have established a policy of one classroom celebration per month.

These celebrations may be focused around a theme, holiday, or the time that the teacher acknowledges the students birthdays that are in that particular month. The following requirements are listed to insure fairness to all classrooms and establish a standard of responsibility for organization and efficiency.

All teachers must submit an activity request prior to the requested celebration date. The celebration request must be approved by administration and nursing to ensure that students with allergies are not exposed to dangerous foods. If the celebration will be held in the lunch area, include that information on the request. No celebrations may be held outside during our scheduled lunch periods. However, the lunch arbor may be reserved for the last 20 minuets of the school day. All parents that assist with the celebration must adhere to the volunteer sign in/out policy.

In compliance with the SDUSD guidelines for food distributed on campuses, please limit foods with high amounts of added fats, sugars and artificial/added trans fats.

Recommended foods that meet the guidelines are

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables,
  • Fruit cups
  • String cheese
  • Granola or Cereal bars,
  • Fruit or vegetable juice with at least 50% natural juice

Other ways to celebrate and recognize students and non-food ideas:

  • Hold class outdoors
  • Photo recognition bulletin board
  • Free choice time at the end of the day
  • Listen to music
  • Giving students pencils, erasers, or stickers instead of food
